Our Methodology: 2026 Lawyer Cost Data
Data Sources
Our 2026 attorney fee data is compiled from three primary sources:
Clio Legal Trends Report (2025): Provides aggregated, anonymized data from over 100,000 legal professionals using Clio's practice management software.
State Bar Association Surveys: Annual fee surveys published by individual state bar associations (including California, New York, Texas, and Florida).
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS): Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for lawyers (May 2024 data, adjusted for 2026).
How We Calculate Averages
Hourly Rates: Displayed as the median hourly rate across all practice areas in each state.
Divorce Costs: Based on uncontested divorces involving child custody and division of assets. Contested divorce costs are significantly higher.
Bankruptcy Costs: Chapter 7 bankruptcy attorney fees only (excludes court filing fees).
Update Frequency
This data is updated annually in January. Last updated: January 2026.
